How did I create these pictures?
I took the pictures using a digital camera this meant that I could transfer the image files on to the computer easily. I also shot the images in raw format, this format retains the image quality when manipulating the pictures in Photoshop. Once I opened the pictures in Photoshop I duplicated the original background layer (Cmd J), this meant that I could change between the layers and refer or revert back to the original layer if needed.
After I duplicated the layer, I changed the saturation on the 1st background layer making it B&W (Cmd U).
On the 2nd layer I used the filter soft lighting (from the drop down shown with the layers), changed the levels of colour (Cmd L) and then merged the two layers by changing the opacity of layer 2 to approximately 70% so that both layers merged. This made the overall picture look more atmospheric. I then changed the opacity of the layer so you can still see some of the original layer and colours.
What worked well?
I think that this picture has worked well this is because the persons hand/arm leads you into the picture reviling the side of his face and hair. It has a high contrast of dark background that merges with the arm and shoulder. This makes the viewer focus on to the subject of the head and hand, not distracted by background objects. This has also worked well because I have managed to capture lots of texture of the flesh with the wrinkles on his hands, neck and the partially creased party hat. The party hat also breaks the picture up showing a new and bright colour accent that fits in with the same colours tones that are in the persons face.
How does this for in with your theme of issues of concern?
I believe that this fits in with my theme of issues of concern, this is because it shows how easily one can be in a party situation but still have cause for or feel concern, lonely or be left behind and forgotten in society. This also shows my concern of the future and unknown, where we will end up and who people are and what they are capable of doing and becoming.
How can you improve the picture?
I can improve this picture by adding more colour saturation, this would make the colour brighter making the picture look more vivid. I could also improve the picture by turning up the opacity this would bring in more detailing and texture into the picture.
